A Look Back on the History of Thanksgiving Day

As we all know, Thanksgiving is one of our most beloved holidays each year. It’s a day for family gatherings, feasting, and fun. But, I wonder, how many of us stop to think about the people who started this tradition so long ago — and why?

The celebration dates back to 1621 here in the United States. Plymouth, Massachusetts experienced a particularly good harvest that year. So they decided to celebrate with a day of prayer and a large feast to commemorate the abundance of their crops.

Some of the Pilgrims and Puritans who had immigrated here from England by the early 1600s brought with them their own tradition of celebrating what they called “Days of Fasting” and “Days of Thanksgiving.”More than a century later, during the American Revolution, political governance attributed the success of their causes to God. As a means of giving thanks, various proclamations were issued to celebrate what we now know as Thanksgiving Day.

November 26, 1789 marked the first nationwide Thanksgiving celebration when President George Washington proclaimed it “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God.”Adding a bit of humor to this new tradition, it became the custom for the President to ‘pardon’ one lucky turkey every year so it could spend the rest of its life roaming freely instead of winding up as dinner on someone’s table!

It’s interesting to note that Thanksgiving Day is also celebrated worldwide. However, each country holds their individual holiday feasts on different dates.

In my family, Thanksgiving dinner normally consists of, what else, but Turkey! Stuffed and served with cranberry sauce, who can ever forget the aroma of it slowly roasting in the oven? I get hungry just thinking about it right now! The smell permeates the entire house and has everyone anxiously awaiting a mouth-watering feast. This includes other traditional foods such as cornbread, mashed potatoes, sweet meat pie, and who can ever forget those scrumptious desserts? We enjoy homemade specialties like pecan, apple, and pumpkin pie. And someone usually brings a cheesecake with cherries or strawberries and a pumpkin roll. Yum!

In keeping with our country’s age old tradition, we here at Neat Stuff Gifts know the importance of Thanksgiving Day. We also know that due to our busy schedules in today’s world, most of us are rushing around at the last minute preparing for this wonderful, yet somewhat hectic, holiday. Thanksgiving is only a couple of weeks away, so start getting ready now.
