Neat Stuff Gifts is
the joining of two loves. Literally!
Owners Carol and
Cliff Meyer are happily married, and over two decades ago they decided to
combine both their loves to start a business together.
He was a national
award winning salesman, representing top-of-the-line children’s products like
Gund, Sanrio, and Price Stern Sloan books. Despite Cliff’s success, his dream
was to have his own business.
She was an award winning
writer/producer, who had worked for some of the world’s best ad agencies,
including Young and Rubicam. Carol
enjoyed her work. However, her childhood
dream was to become an artist. But as an
adult, painting was merely her hobby.
One day while working
in northern New Jersey, Cliff called on a small store that carried personalized
gifts. He was very impressed with their
hand painted items. Instantly he knew
this was the perfect business for the two of them, as it would combine both
their life’s ambitions. He rushed home
to tell Carol.
She went with him to
see what the little store was all about and quickly agreed. She knew she could not only do what they did,
she knew she could do it better. So
Neat Stuff was born right then and there.
But where did they get that name?
As a sales rep, Cliff
had stored all his samples in a big walk-in closet in the house. We’re talking about big, beautiful teddy
bears, tons of Hello Kitty, and unique pop-up books for kids. Well, their little daughter, Gretchen, could
not resist. When her friends came over,
she would swing open the door and flip on the lights. You should have seen the look on those little
girl’s faces! They would gasp and then squeal,
"Look at all this neat stuff!”
One of the pioneers
in the field of personalization, Neat Stuff first opened its doors in Somerset,
NJ in 1989. Later they opened a second
store in Hillsborough, NJ. Then, while
the internet was still in its infancy, they became one of the first businesses
to open an e-commerce site. A few years later, they moved to Pittsburgh, which is Cliff's hometown. Then they moved once more to double their space, and are currently located just south of the Pennsylvania border in West Virginia.
Today, as always,
Neat Stuff focuses on providing unique personalized products and excellent
customer service. Carol and Cliff take
pride in their business. They care about
their customers. And they stand behind
their products.
Perhaps that explains
why many of their original customers are still shopping with them after all
these years. Some are second generation.
They are the kids who grew up with a roomful of "neat stuff” who are now acquiring
gifts for their own family and friends.
And since opening their website, the couple has acquired new customers from
around the world, many who order regularly.
Neat Stuff Gifts has
long been known for their personalized baby gifts. More recently however, they began expanding
into other areas, introducing unique gift ideas for all occasions. Of
course, they still carry all those adorable hand painted children’s items. All of the artwork is designed by Carol, and
she still enjoys painting many of the orders herself.
One thing is for
sure. If you want a present that’s
different, something that will really impress your gift recipients, you can’t
go wrong with anything you choose from Neat Stuff Gifts. When they open their package and see where it’s
from, don’t be surprised if you hear them say, "Wow! This really is neat stuff.”
